Grandfather Drunk in Wreck That Killed Him and His Grandson

Anytime a child loses his or her life, it is tragic. To have a child’s death caused by something preventable, such as the negligence of a drunk driver, can make the loss even more difficult to bear. For that negligence to be a product of a family member getting behind the wheel of a vehicle carrying a child after drinking, is incomprehensible.

However, as hard as it is to comprehend, people drinking and driving with kids in the car happens more often than you might think. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in 2011, 226 children were killed in drunk driving accidents. Of those, 54 percent of the children were riding with the drunk driver.

Last month, a Sumter man was driving drunk when he had an accident that left him and his grandson dead and six others injured. The two-vehicle accident happened right in front of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office around 5:45 p.m., according to WBTW News 13.

Leading up to the wreck, both vehicles, a 1997 Lincoln Town Car and a 2003 Ford Expedition, were passing through the 1200 block of North Main Street. The accident occurred when the Town Car crossed over the white line and collided with the Expedition.

Both occupants of the Lincoln, the driver and his grandson, were pronounced dead at the scene. None of the occupants of the Expedition died in the wreck, but six were injured.

According to the coroner, the blood alcohol level of the driver of the Town Car was three times the legal limit at the time of the crash.
